High Tax On Liquor Forces AP Drunkards Into Telangana
X
To discourage the people from buying and drinking liquor, the AP Government has imposed 75 per cent taxes. Though the intention seems to be quite good, the results sure are counter-productive. With the neighbouring Telangana selling liquor at lower price, all along the border there is a rush to come into Telangana and buy liquor from there. The liquor is sold for profit in AP. On a full bottle, a profit of up to Rs 750 is being made. Thus, AP is losing in terms of revenue.

As a result, the people of border villages Anumanchipalli, Sher Mohammad Pet, Budada, Annavaram and Balusupadu in AP are entering into Kodad mandal of Nalgonda district. If sources are to be believed at least one hundred persons are entering into Telangana to buy liquor in KOdad. Similarly, the people from Guntur district are crossing Krishna river to Dondapadu in Nalgonda. Why? To buy liquor! If sources are to be believed, the people of Adavidevulapalle are making a kill ferrying across wine from Telangana to AP. For each trip, they are earning up to Rs 3000. If one carton of liquor is smuggled into AP, a person can earn up to Rs 6400.

Though AP excise officials and the border police are conducting raids on such smugglers, many are able to hoodwink them and are able to smuggle in liquor. The sales of liquor on the border areas in AP have come down considerably and the smuggled liquor is being sold on the sly.
