Comment: Are Heroines Really Not important?

During the early ages of Telugu Cinema, Malapilla starring an actress like Kanchanamala became a huge controversy because of the title and progressive story. In the film, actress is involved in few intimate scenes for that time and an inter caste marriage is shown too.

Later, progressively the actresses roles have become highly unpopular until, Bhanumati, Savitri, Anjali Devi, Jamuna came along to act in different roles and their fame even faded out big actors like Jagayya, SVR, NTR and ANR.

Rather than submissive roles that which Sri Ranjani kind of actresses became known for Savitri did mellow yet rebellious kind of women roles on screen and Bhanumathi got a name with strong women roles on screen.

Even though hero is given importance, they had their importance. From 60's women centric cinema got more takers and Jamuna carried the baton from Bhanumathi in such films.

Mid-70's changed all that with the emergence of mass masala films, still Vijaya Nirmala, Vani Sree, Jayapradha, Jayasudha and Sridevi had their set of films that showcased them as the main story protagonists till 90's.

But from then on the actresses had to fade out into the background and they don't even get separate posters or good part in promotional material even though they go ahead and promote the film, the most.

We don't see good characters being written on a regular basis and when people come up with ideas of separate posters they are discouraged.

Recently, even though Rangasthalam team released separate teaser and song for Samantha Akkineni, no posters of the actress are being released except for Ram Charan's posters.

Even though director wants to do so, producers want to promote it as an hero's film only it seems. From highly placed sources, even producers of KrishnaArjuna Yuddham are also happy with solo posters of Nani but nothing for actresses it seems.

Even Nani is thinking that it is ok to promote the film as producers see it fit it seems. On one side, we are daily hearing complaints of being 'used' by high profile people in Industry by aspirants like Sri Reddy and many actresses also, most of them, privately and few, openly express that good roles for actresses have come down drastically.

So, is the importance of Telugu actresses should be limited to just dancing around and falling in love with hero? Should only women-centric films should be made for actresses to get their due? Isn't a movie, equal responsibility on each and every cast and crew member? Are we expecting too ideal world?
