Prank Callers Choke Dial 100 Service

At a time when the police and the administration are straining their every nerve to fight the deadly Corona, the commoners, who are under lockdown, are taking it easy. Many are keeping themselves busy making crank calls to the emergency toll free numbers. They may get some fun out of all this, but these calls are proving to be a big headache for the police and the bureaucracy.

The police say that at least 75 per cent of the calls to the toll-free 100 number are just pranks. According to the Dial 100 control room in Kompally, between March 22 and April 6, there were 12,30, 997 calls to Dial 100. Of them, only 2,66,550 cases were genuine. All other calls were from pranksters out to harass the police. These are either fake or bogus calls. Due to this, the system got choked and genuine callers had to wait for a longer time. Since each call takes up at least up to 40 seconds, the police say that they are blocking at least 250 such crank callers everyday to de-congest the system.

This is very irresponsible, said a police officer, who is handling the calls. He said many a time, genuine callers are put to untold hardships.
