The Buying Power Of The Poor Baffles Social Activists
X
Everyone, including those who have been distributing free food and groceries to the poorest of the poor and the migrant workers, are shocked at the buying power of these very people. These people were till the other day complaining about starving, but today are standing in the queue for hours on end to buy liquor.

This only demonstrates the buying power of the labourers. What has left the NGO activists and social workers dumbstruck is the fact that these poor people do not seem to mind paying astronomically high sums to lay their hands on liquor. While Delhi has levied 70 per cent taxes on the liquor, the AP Government has imposed 75 per cent. Despite that, the people are queuing up to buy liquor. Now, the governments are said to be mulling removal of subsidies on power. Similarly tax incentives too are likely to go.

Interestingly, even the Left parties, which take cudgels on behalf of the 'poor', are flabbergasted by this buying power of these people. They are finding It difficult to support these people. They feel taking to streets for such people would actually alienate a large section of the society from the Left.
