Is Comedy In Telugu Cinema Getting Too Routine?
X
Variety has been the USP of Telugu Cinema comedy. In early days, comedians like Relangi, Padmanabham, Rajababu, Allu Ramalingayya, Girija, Balakrishna, Peketi Sivaram, Suryakantham, Ramana Reddy, Chalam, Ramaprabha brought in more variety to comedy.

They did slap-stick, satire, body language, dialogue oriented, witty, one-liners, pun intended, mime, situational, double-meaning, sexual innuendo based comedy but never let one dominate the other.

There was a balance and with Jandhyala era, the balance slightly shifted towards more dialogue oriented and satire comedy. Sutti Veerabhadra Rao, Sutti Velu, Mishro, Dharmavarapu Subramanyam, Kota Srinivasa Rao, Sri Lakshmi, Gundu Hanumantha Rao came into prominence.

Rajendra Prasad and Naresh, became the comic lead actors who carried the baton along with these comic actors. Later in 90's, AVS, Babu Mohan and with EVV Satyanarayana emergence, M.S. Narayana and L.B. Sriram also joined them.

These actors slowly brought in the variety back and the dialogue oriented comedy saw some different styles as well. That saved the comedy scene from being too one-dimensional and routine.

Sunil and Trivikram Srinivas brought in dialogue punch based comedy, another form of witty one-liners, into the scene and that became the norm. Even today, that style of comedy in ruling the roost.

With most of the elders from Jandhyala and EVV Satyanarayana era either retired or dead, barring Brahmanandam and LB Sriram, the variety seems to have gone out of our Telugu Cinema comedy.

New comedians like Sapthagiri, Srinivas Reddy, Shakalaka Shankar, Priyadarshi and even Jabardasth comedians, like Hyper Aadi, Ramprasad, Sudheer and Getup Srinu, sticking to one format of comedy, we don't see the variety emerging.

The subtleness of Amrutham that Gundu Hanumantha Rao carried forward seems to be going absent from our comedy scene with more punch dialogue and satire based comedy taking over.

We do need a change from this as the mixture is not balanced. We need more and more comedians who can bring freshness to comedy rather than deliver old punches in new style.

Even though if we can find actors, can we find writers who can bring such uniqueness to comedy again? Well, we have to wait till everything unfolds in front of our eyes like we always do in the hope of better tomorrow!
