Finally, a Dalit As a Left Party Chief
X
For the first ever time in their seven-decade old history, the. CPI has got a Dalit as its party head. CPI's senior leader D Raja has taken over from Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy as the general secretary of the party. He is the first ever Dalit to do so. This could effectively end the criticism that the Left parties do not have any key Dalit leader in the higher echelons of the party.

Raja rose from the grassroots level to become the party chief. But, soon after his elevation as the party general secretary, he has completed his term at the Rajya Sabha. On Wednesday, he gave his farewell speech and has thus ended his term. Interestingly, there is no possibility of his getting re-elected as his party has no strength to get him elected from anywhere in the country. The only party that could send him to Rajya Sabha is the DMK, but the party seems disinclined to do it. Thus, Raja's parliamentary career has all but ended.

Thus, the general secretaries of both the CPI and the CPM are not members of any house now. This has happened for the first time in the history of the Communist movement in the country.
