Fall in vote percentage worries TRS

The steep fall in the voting percentage in all the civic bodies around the GHMC has left the political class baffled. While, the polling percentage in other municipalities and corporations in the districts was very good, the response in places like Nizampet, Jawahar Nagar, Badangpet, Manikonda, Jalpally, Bandlaguda Jagir has been lukewarm.
The polling percentage in the newly-carved Nizampet Municipality is just 39 per cent. The area is inhabited by employees of the Telangana secretariat and other government departments. A significant number of the voters are also migrants from the coastal Andhra region. This region had solidly remained behind the TRS in the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. But, this time around there was no voter enthusiasm. Out of the total of 1.09 lakh voters, only 43000 voters had voted, while over 60000 had stayed away from the elections.
Sources say with the government declaring election day as a holiday, those who had gone to their native villages had stayed back and would be coming only on Monday. This could be one of the main reasons for the low turnout. Similarly, in other municipalities around the GHMC, the polling percentage has been way too low. The political parties are now worried about which party would be affected by the low turnout.
