Monsoon this year has been a nightmare for the Keralites. Record rainfall led to flooding and landslides since August 8th. Public Life in as many as 14 districts has been worsely affected. Over 400 people had died and Rs 2 lakh crore damage is estimated.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has released satellite images and graphics of Kerala before and after floods. They depict the rainfall accumulation from July 19th to August 18th.

Floodgates of as many as 80 dams across Kerala has been opened during the same period. 35 out of them were opened for the first time since their construction. Intensity of the rainfall is high when these developments happened. All of these resulted in the massive devastation.

Sujay Kumar, a research scientist at NASA, opined opening of the floodgates happened way too late and it coincided with heavy downpour. 164 percent more rainfall than normal was recorded from Aug 1st to 20th.
