Have you seen a mobile number introduced by Indian Telecom Operators with more than 10 digits? This is gonna happen soon!
Department of Telecom (DoT) directed all Telecom Operators in the country to start issuing 13-digit mobile numbers to M2M Customers from July 1st, 2018. This move is intended to provide better security features.
A section of Media reported that all the existing 10-digit Mobile Numbers will be converted to 13-digits from October to December 2018. This news created a panic situation and public had no clue if their existing numbers will function or not after the conversion. Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) issued a statement clarifying existing mobile numbers willn't be affected by the directive. Only the SIMs used in Swiping Machines, Cars and Electronic Metres will need to shift to 13 digit. This new rule applies for just Machine-2-Machine devices.
Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel issued a statement assuring the directive from Department of Telecom (DoT) is only applicable for SIM-based M2M devices. This confusion is because of the misleading reporting of few media houses.
