107 MLAs face Criminal Cases, 322 are Crorepatis!

As many as 107 MLAs (26 percent) in Uttar Pradesh face serious criminal cases for which are non-bailable and imprisonment could be five years or more. Out of these 107 MLAs, 83 represent BJP, 11 from SP, 4 from BSP, 1 from Congress and 3 Independents. While 8 MLAs had declared Murder Cases against them, 34 Legislators declared Attempt-to-Murder Cases.

In 2012, About 98 MLAs (24 percent) had faced serious criminal cases.

As per the study of UP Election Watch & Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR), About 143 MLAs (36 Percent) have declared criminal charges against them while filing election affidavit in 2017. In 2012, 189 MLAs (47 percent) faced criminal charges.

About 322 MLAs (80 percent) are crorepatis. In 2012, 271 MLAs (67 percent) have declared their assets worth over Rs 1 crore. On an average, Each candidate who won in 2017 UP Assembly Polls have assets worth Rs 5.92 crore. Whereas, Average of re-elected MLAs stood at Rs 8.62 crore.

While 290 MLAs (72 Percent) declared their educational qualification of graduate, 101 (25 Percent) claimed they had passed just Class XII or Class XIII.

About 201 (50 Percent) MLAs declare their age to be between 25 to 50. Another 201 (50 Percent) MLAs claimed to be falling in the age group of 51-80. Only 10 Percent of MLAs in Uttar Pradesh Assembly are women.
