Former Naxal Is Now A BJP MP
X
Do you know that at least one BJP MP from Telangaana has a Maoist background? He had worked underground for sometime before surrendering and then was active in Left of the Centre organisations for decades?

Yes. Adilabad MP Soyam Bapurao is a former Naxal who was for decades active in tribal organisations with left leanings. He led the Gond Adivasi organisation Tudum Debba and was active in fighting for the Gond community. But, even while being a Naxal, Bapurao was an ardent devotee of Lord Hanuman. It was this connection that brought him closer to the allied organisations of the BJP. Later, he got involved in BJP activity at a very low level. During this period, he joined various parties and contested elections unsuccessfully.

But, this time around the BJP asked him to join the party and gave him the party ticket. There was certain amount of opposition to him within the party at the local level because of his antecedents. But, the national leadership ignored them and supported Bapurao. As expected, he got the Adivasi Gond votes in considerable numbers against the Lambadi candidates of other parties. Besides, the BJP traditional vote, he also got some votes from both the Congress and the TRS. This made him a winning candidate.
