At least 59 people were killed in the deadly train accident which took place in Punjab's Amritsar on Friday. Two Trains moving in opposite directions mowed down people watching the effigy of Ravan burn during Dussehra Celebrations while standing on the railway tracks at the Dhobi Ghat Ground. Bodies of close to 40 deceased people were identified up to now.
Close to 300 people were present at the Jaura Phatak crossing to get a better view of the Ravan effigy burning. While the first train (74643 Jalandhar-Amritsar DMU) ran over people, Second Train (13006 Amritsar-Howrah Express) arrived from the opposite direction within few seconds. Those who moved from one track to the other after noticing the first train got moved down by the second train.
Punjab Government announced compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the families of the deceased. PM Modi offered compensation of Rs 2 lakh for deceased ad Rs 50,000 for the injured.
