Anti-Sterlite Protests in Thoothukudi led to the deaths of 11 people and injured over 30 others.

Locals have been staging protests since the past 100 days demanding the shutdown of Sterlite Copper's Industrial Plant in Thoothukudi. On Tuesday, Protesters marched towards the manufacturing plant despite 144 Section in the area. Violence broke when Cops confronted the Protesters citing lack of permission. To control the situation, Lathi-Charge and Tear Gap was initially preferred. Finally, An order has been passed for firing to prevent further destruction of public properties.

Sterlite Copper which produces 400,000 tonne per annum belongs Vedanta Limited. Residents allege wastes from the manufacturing plant has been polluting the ground water. Whereas, TSA demands reopening of the Manufacturing Plant citing it creates employment for thousands of people. 35 percent of the copper in the country is being manufactured here.

Madras High Court issued a stay on the expansion of Sterlite Copper's industrial unit Yesterday. Tamil Nadu CM Palaniswami ordered for a judicial inquiry into the firing incident and announced Rs 10 lakh compensation for the families of the deceased.
