Will This Grand Old Party Lose National Status?
X
One of the biggest upsets of this election is that both the Left parties have been completely wiped out. The CPM, which was in power in three states till 2011, is now staring at the danger of losing the national party status. The party has won just 3 MP seats from two states - Kerala and Tamil Nadu. It drew a blank in Tripura and West Bengal, which were considered its strongholds till recently. Thus the party will lose its national status.

A party has to get at least 5 MP seats from four states and poll at least 4 per cent of votes across the country. The CPM does not fulfil any of these conditions. So, it could actually lose its national party status. The CPI has already lost this status long time ago.

Thus, the Left Parties are staring at extinction in India. The party has been completely rejected across the country. In fact, its victory in Tamil Nadu is not on account of its own strength. It has won because of the alliance with the DMK. Riding a DMK wave, it managed to win two seats.
