Chandrababus Cofferdam Mistake Proves Costly For Tribals

The experts warned that Cofferdam would be a disaster for Polavaram and that it would ruin the tribal habitations adjoining the Polavaram dam. But, Chandrababu Naidu government did not pay any heed to these warnings. Not just that, it had not made any attempt to consider the tribal concerns.

Today, the same cofferdam is spelling doom for the tribals from Devipatnam to Kunavaram. Had the Cofferdam been built in the systematic way, this would not have happened. The cofferdam, built by the Chandrababu Naidu government is 1800 metres long and 2400 metres wide extending. But, it left 300 metres of space on both sides. It is through this gap that the flood waters are inundating the villages. The Government did not offer any relief and rehabilitation package to the tribals.

Before the cofferdam, the tribal habitations would be inundated only after the third danger alert is hoisted. This has happened in 1953, 1986 and 2013. The third danger alert will be hoisted only when Godavari river level reaches 53 feet . But, due to the construction of the cofferdam, the inundation has happened just after the first level danger alert was hoisted. It is clear that the Cofferdam has done the damage. As many as 5000 tribal habitations are now flooded. Chandrababu Naidu's mindless decision on Polavaram has caused this intensive damage, say experts and the affected tribals.
