The Congress core team, it appears, is vertically split on the issue of seeking the support from the regional parties in Andhra Pradesh. While the young guns are rooting for YS Jagan, the old guard, who have their own link-ups with Chandrababu want to have an understanding with the TDP.
The Congress, which realises that it can stay afloat only when it joins hands with regional satraps, has already begun working out a strategy to woo the regional parties. In case of Andhra Pradesh, there is a dilemma as to whether to go with the TDP or with YSRCP. AP Congress affairs in-charge Oomen Chandy has already got in touch with YS Jagan, who reportedly told him that he would consider alliance based on the situation developing after May 23.
Leaders like Digvijay Singh, Sonia Gandhi's political secretary Ahmed Patel and Rahul's best buddy Jyotiraditya Scindia are rooting for YS Jagan, but former finmin Chidambaram is backing Chandrababu Naidu. Chidu had worked with Chandrababu during the Third Front era and also in the NDA. Later, he had maintained good relations with Chandrababu Naidu even during the Manmohan era. In fact, Chandrababu and Chidu used to have secret meetings regularly as part of their efforts to bog down Jagan by foisting cases.
Whatever may be the old connections, the Congress will make its choice on the basis of who gets how many seats in Lok Sabha from Andhra Pradesh. Also, who gets to form the government in AP will also determine the Congress decision.
