Try to search the word 'Idiot' on Google the word 'idiot' and in the images, most of the pics that pop up belong to Donald Trump. But how does search work has become a hot topic? On this note, Google chief executive Sundar Pichai has something to say.
While testifying in front of the House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, Sundar Pichai explained how the algorithms take more than 200 factors before showing the best match. The factors include relevance, popularity etc. He stated that there will be no little man sitting behind the curtain and decides what to show the user. Recently, a hearing that revealed lawmakers' understanding of how the internet works took place which became a platform for them to complain about the unfavourable search results like this. Lamar Smith, R-Texas, asked Sundar Pichai whether he had ever directed an employee to manipulate search results to which the Google CEO explained that it's not possible for one person or a group of people to do that as there will be so many steps involved in the process. "I disagree. I think that humans can manipulate this process." Said Smith. They claimed that Google changes the search algorithms for political gain. Rep. Steve Chabot, R-Ohio raised a complaint that when he googled the Republican health care bill or the GOP tax cuts, the first several pages listed negative articles only and asked how Pichai explains this apparent bias against the conservative points of view.
"Congressman, I understand the frustration of seeing negative news. The thing is, we use the robust methodology to reflect what is being said about any given topic at any particular time. Also, we try to do it objectively, using a set of rubrics." Said Pichai.
