Bishwajeet Kumar Jha, who is the leader of a group of Indian College Students doing hospitality industry internships in the US, was sentenced to 5 years in prison for duping over 20 Senior Citizens aged between 58 to 93 years. The 21-Year-Old was found guilty of providing technical support to a telemarketing fraud scheme which cheated Senior Citizens of their retirement savings up to $1 million.

Victims who obtained the technical support were made to believe they had received the refund but that didn't happen in reality. The Victims lost anywhere from $1,180 to $174,300 due to the telemarketing fraud scheme. In a period of 3 months, The total loss is estimated to be $937,280.

Newport Police came to know about the telemarketing scam on November 20th, 2018. After which, Cops raided the residence of Bishwajeet Kumar Jha and rest of the people involved in the scam. Investigators found out that lakhs of dollars collected through the conspiracy were diverted to a bank account in California. Thereafter, The amount was transferred to accounts in countries like India, Singapore and China.
