Since few days, Speculations were abuzz that Priyanka Gandhi will be fielded against Narendra Modi in Varanasi by the Congress Party. Even the strategic silence of the Congress Leadership had given strength to these reports in circulation. When he was quizzed about any such possibility few days ago, Rahul Gandhi told he wishes to maintain suspense over it. Priyanka, on the other hand, gave a diplomatic answer: 'I will abide by the decision of the party high command'.
Putting an end to all the speculations, Congress Party on Thursday announced Ajay Rai as its candidate for Varanasi Lok Sabha Constituency. He was the one who had unsuccessfully contested against Modi in 2014 Elections. Ajay Rai settled for third position, after BJP's Narendra Modi and AAP's Arvind Kejriwal. While Modi secured 5.81 lakh votes, Ajay Rai managed only around 75,000 votes.
Election to Varanasi Lok Sabha Constituency is going to happen in the seventh phase on May 19th. Most probably, Modi will be emerging victorious yet again but his majority might be under 3 lakhs.
