Union Government on Tuesday withdrawn Haj Subsidy saying such a decision is being taken to empower the minorities sans any appeasements. Union Minister for Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi informed that the funds (Rs 700 crore) meant for Haj subsidy will be now diverted to education and welfare of Muslims Girls.

In 2012, Supreme Court ordered Centre to withdraw Haj subsidy gradually saying its unconstitutional and against the teachings of Quran.

In Haj subsidy, Pilgrims would get discounts on Air India flight tickets, medical care, food and lodging. Now, Centre scrapped all of them.

Saudi Arabia increased India's pilgrim quota by 5,000 recently. This year, Highest number of pilgrims (1.75 lakh) can go to Haj. The new move by Government will have an impact on the Haj Pilgrimage. Especially, Poor Muslims willn't be able to afford the expenses.
