Everest.. A Dumping Yard
X
Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay climbed the Mount Everest for the first time and created a record 65 years ago. Several enthusiasts started climbing Everest since then by taking inspiration from them. This is only one side of the coin. Everest which is known for the scenic beauty and adventurous mountaineering has become a dumping yard now.

The way from foothills to the mountaintop is filled with garbage disposed by the mountaineers. As the number of mountaineers is increasing with each passing year, Everest has become the highest dumping yard in the world. Environmentalists are cautioning that the garbage is mixing with the ice and it is generating polluted water whenever the ice is melting.

As the beautiful Himalayas are getting dirty with the garbage accumulation, Nepal government started taking damage control measures a five years ago. They have set a rule that each team of mountaineers should deposit Rs.2.7 lakhs before they start the expedition. Each member of the team should bring back 8 kilos of garbage when they are returning otherwise the deposit money will not be refunded. Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee revealed that the mountaineers have brought 25 tonnes of garbage, 15 tonnes of human waste last year. They are saying that it is very less compared to the garbage which is accumulating on the mountain.

They are saying that only half of the Mountaineers are bringing the garbage back and taking their deposit money. A single team spends Rs.14 lakhs to Rs.68 lakhs for climbing the Everest.. so they are not caring about Rs.2.7 lakhs deposit. Pemba Dorje Sherpa who summited the Mount Everest has expressed his sadness at the current state of affairs. He said that the number of mountaineers has increased and they are making the mountain a garbage dump.
