On a day when the Congress Party was holding its key strategy meet for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, BSP supremo Mayawati administered the biggest shock to the party and to the unity of anti-Modi forces. It said the BSP would not align with the Congress in any state, thus pouring cold water on the possibility of Mayawati helping the Congress and preventing division of votes.
Already, the BSP and the SP have entered into an alliance in the all-important UP by keeping Congress out of it. The BSP-SP-RJD alliance has just left two seats - Amethi and Rae Bareli - to Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi. This means, Congress is effectively out of the scene in UP. More importantly, the BSP will not have any truck in states like MP, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, where its votes are important for the Congress. A stung Congress said that it does not need Mayawati and predicted that her alliance with the Samajwadi Party would also break soon.
These wrangles could be music to the ears of Narendra Modi and his BJP as no alliance means split in the Opposition votes. With the Congress out of the alliance, the BJP will be in a better position to win maximum number of seats. In fact, the BJP won 71 seats from UP in the 2014 elections and the UP results are key to the formation of any Government.
