In his book 'The Coalition Years: 1996-2012', Former President Pranab Mukherjee disclosed how West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee had once humiliated and insulted him.

In 1992, There were media reports saying Topbrass Congress Leaders in West Bengal including Mamata Banerjee doesn't want an Open Election. Then PM and Congress President PV Narasimha Rao instructed Pranab Mukherjee to find a solution to the issue. During the meeting on how Congress Organisational Polls should be held, Mamata had accused Pranab and other Congress Leaders of conspiring against her. She suddenly changed her stand and decided to face Open Election. Mamata had stormed out of the meeting leaving Pranab humiliated and insulted. She, however, lost to Somen Mitra in that election by a narrow margin for the post of West Bengal PCC President.

After the announcement of election result, Mamata walked up to Pranab and asked, 'Are you happy now?'. Pranab then told her he had no intention to defeat her at all.

Pranab described Mamata Banerjee as 'born rebel' who built her own career, fearlessly and aggressively. He says, 'What Mamata is Today is an outcome her own struggle and hardwork. The aura around her is difficult to explain but impossible to ignore'.

The Ex-President told Mamata emerged as giant killer by defeating someone as influential as CPI's Somnath Chatterjee in Jadavpur during 1984 Lok Sabha polls. He feels Didi have a track record of converting challenges into opportunities.
