TRAI opts for Net Neutrality

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) ruled in favor of Net Neutrality by barring Telecom Service Providers from charging discriminatory tariffs for data services on the basis of content. The regulatory authority even warned that a fine of Rs 50,000 per day to a maximum of Rs 50 lakh will be imposed if any of the service providers violate the norms.

TRAI opined Net Neutrality is essential and Internet Service Providers must enable access to the whole content irrespective of the source. While Netizens have welcomed the ruling of TRAI, Telecom Service Providers cry foul.

The new regulations of TRAI prohibits Facebook's Free Basics and Airtel's Airtel Zero Platform.

As per the new regulations, Existing Plans which are against the norms can continue for a period of 6 months and thereafter they should be stopped
