Vel-Kam to Kamma vs Velama

Have Chandrababuâs hasty political ploys led to a major caste war in Andhra Pradesh? It appears so. The otherwise silent Velama community in Andhra Pradesh have blown bugles and launched an allout attack on Kamma community, the community that Chandrababu Naidu belongs to.
In many places in AP like Ganapavaram, Narsipatnam, Gudiwada, Nuzvid, Bobbili and Vizianagaram, where Velamas reside in significant numbers, flexi posters of KCR have sprung up. The posters praised âMana Velamaâ KCR for winning the Telangana elections in style. The posters appeared to be gloating more about the defeat of the Kammas rather than the victory of Velamas.
With Chandrababu Naidu unleashing Kamma politics full throttle to defeat KCR in Telangana, the Velamas took offence. Chandrababu leveraged all Kamma Sanghams in both the Telugu states to whip up caste frenzy among the Kammas so that they back the TDP. This made Velamas, a minority community spread in both the Telugu states see red. KCR belongs to this caste. So, when KCR had won a landslide, the Velamas had celebrated and put up posters.
Interestingly, only till a few months ago, there was a talk of Vel-Kom combination in Telangana, which talked about an understanding between Kamma-dominated TDP and Velama-led TRS before the Assembly elections. This combination suddenly fell through, when Chandrababu courted the Congress and formed a Maha Kutami.
