Atal Bihari Vajpayee, without doubt, India's tallest leader, is no more. Masterly orator, mesmerizing public leader, magnetic personality and a racontier par excellence, Atalji was also a consummate politician who had the uncanny knack of assessing individuals. Such was his expert understanding of men that he had long ago warned the BJP leaders of the Telugu states against Chandrababu Naidu.
Unbelievable but true! He had warned that the ride is going to be very bumpy for the BPJ if it aligns with Chandrababu Naidu. He told the BJP leaders that one has to be very careful about someone who backstabbed his father-in-law NTR.
During mid-1990s, one particular leader from Andhra Pradesh BJP was pressing for BJP's alliance with the TDP.At that time, the BJP had an alliance with Lakshmi Parvathi faction and was planning to go to the polls together. During that time, this BJP leader proposed that the BJP align with Chandrababu.
When the party leaders were discussing this issue, Vajpayee intervened and said friendship with Chandrababu would not be an easyone and asked the party men to think over as the BJP would not be able to match Chandrababu's Machiavellian machinations. But, the party went ahead with Chandrababu and paid the price. Chandrababu forced mid-term elections on the BJP and Atalji lost power in 2004. For 10 years, Chandrababu stayed away from the BJP only to come back in 2014. But, both Modi and Amit Shah are cleverr and have ensured that the alliance breaks in just four years.
