They joined hands to prevent the BJP from coming to power. But, it appears, their coming together could prove their nemesis for the Congress and the BJP. They are riven by internal contradictions and both Siddaramayya and CM Kumaraswami are involved in a game of one-upmanship. More than that, with the BJP putting in place its Operation Akarsh, many MLAs from both the JDS and the Congress are getting ready to cross over to the BJP.

In the last elections, no party got the magic number of 113. As a result, the BJP, the largest party tried to get support from outside. The BJP had 104 seats, while the Congress and the JDS had 80 and 37 respectively. Three seats went to others. To prevent the BJP from coming to power, the Congress and the JDS joined hands and formed a government. Ever since, the BJP is in touch with these MLAs and is trying to lure the dissidents and disgruntled people.

The BJP got a shot in the arm when two independent MLAs had withdrawn support. One MLA passed away and two Congress MLAs are keeping away from the party affairs. Three more MLAs are now contesting for the Lok Sabha elections.

So, there is every possibility that the Government in Karnataka could become a minority. To add to the woes, Gokak MLA Ramesh Jarkiholi, whose family is with the BJP, might join the BJP. Chincholi will go for bypolls next month as the MLA has resigned after joining the BJP. If the MLAs contesting as MPs resign after winning the seat, there would be four bypolls. If the BJP wins all these, it will get the needed numbers to form a government.
