World Food Day is celebrated on October 16 across the world to honour the establishment of the Food and Agriculture Organization.

The theme of World Food Day is "Our Actions Are Our Future. Healthy Diets for A#ZeroHunger World". It focuses on global hunger.

Over 820 million people worldwide suffer from hunger. According to FAO, 670 million adults and 120 million girls and boys of the age group 5 to 18 years are obese and 40 million children under 5 are overweight due to unhealthy diets and sedentary lifestyles obesity in people is increasing in low developed, low-income countries.

Why is World Food Day important?

FAO celebrates World Food Day each year on 16 October to commemorate the founding of the Organization in 1945. These events promote worldwide awareness and action for those who suffer from hunger and for the need to achieve Zero Hunger, ensuring food security and nutritious diets for all.

Who started World Food Day?

Dr. Pal Romany, the Hungarian Delegation led by the then Minister of Hungary for Agriculture and Food, played a significant role at the 20th General Conference of the FAO and proposed the idea of launching the WFD worldwide.

From a nutrition perspective, there are six main components of a balanced diet: carbohydrates, fats, protein, vitamins, minerals, and water. All six must be consumed regularly.
