Can National Awards Ever Please Everyone?
Every year, when the National Film Awards are announced, one thing is almost certain there will be debates.
Every year, when the National Film Awards are announced, one thing is almost certain there will be debates. No matter how experienced the jury is, it is impossible to satisfy everyone. Some people will be happy with the winners, while others will strongly disagree. This has been happening for years, and the 72nd National Film Awards are no different.
A similar situation happened in the past as well. When Pushpa won major National Awards, many movie lovers questioned why films like Sita Ramam did not receive similar recognition. This year too, social media is filled with discussions about the winners and the films that were left out.
One of the biggest talking points is Laapataa Ladies. Directed by Kiran Rao, the film received praise from both critics and audiences for its emotional story, performances, screenplay, and music. Many expected it to win at least one National Award, but it finished the awards ceremony without any recognition.
Another film that surprised many with its absence from the winners' list was Amar Singh Chamkila. Directed by Imtiaz Ali, the film was appreciated for its storytelling, while Diljit Dosanjh's performance and A.R. Rahman's music were widely praised. Even then, it did not win any award.
Malayalam cinema also had a few notable omissions. Manjummel Boys impressed audiences across India with its gripping survival drama and strong technical quality. Aavesham, featuring Fahadh Faasil in a memorable role as Ranga, became one of the most talked-about films of the year. Yet both films missed out on National Awards.
Many fans also felt that Kishkindha Kaandam deserved recognition for its engaging screenplay and performances. Premalu, which became a blockbuster romantic comedy with strong word-of-mouth, was another film that many believed should have been honoured.
Ajay Devgn's performance as football coach Syed Abdul Rahim in Maidaan also became part of the discussion. Although the film won the Best Lyrics award, several viewers felt his emotional and sincere performance deserved an acting award as well.
National Film Awards are decided by a jury, and every jury has its own perspective and priorities. It is natural that some excellent films and performances may not make the final list. Awards celebrate achievement, but they do not always define a film's true value. Many movies continue to earn love, respect, and a lasting place in the hearts of audiences even without winning a National Award. That is why the debate over deserving winners is likely to continue every year.
