The winners of the 72nd National Film Awards were announced on July 18 by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. These awards celebrate the best Indian films that were certified by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) during 2024. Many popular actors, directors and films received top honours this year.
The biggest award of the ceremony, Best Feature Film, went to Article 370. The political thriller was directed by Aditya Suhas Jambhale and starred Yami Gautam in the lead role. The film was praised for its strong story, powerful performances and impressive direction.
Yami Gautam had another reason to celebrate. She won the Best Actress award for her outstanding performance in Article 370. This is one of the biggest achievements of her career and marks her first National Award.
The Best Actor award was shared by two stars. Kartik Aaryan won for his inspiring performance in Chandu Champion, while Mammootty received the honour for his role in the Malayalam film Bramayugam. Both actors were appreciated for their brilliant performances.
One of the biggest highlights for Telugu cinema was Kalki 2898 AD. The sci-fi blockbuster directed by Nag Ashwin won the Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment award. The film became a huge success across India and received praise for its grand visuals, storytelling and performances.
Another major winner was Amaran. Director Rajkumar Periasamy won the Best Director award for the film. The movie is based on the life of Ashoka Chakra awardee Mukund Varadarajan and was appreciated for its emotional storytelling.
The National Film Awards are considered the highest honour in Indian cinema. An 11-member jury selected the winners after watching films from different languages and genres.
