A compliment turned into a controversy. And now, an apology that’s raising more eyebrows. Bollywood actor, comedian Annu Kapoor, is back in the spotlight for his earlier comments on milky diva Tamannaah Bhatia. What started as praise for her dance quickly went off track when he referenced her skin tone during a discussion around her dancing sequence from ‘Aaj Ki Raat’ movie from Stree 2. Back then, that clip went viral and many trolled him. But here’s the catch.
In his latest comment, Annu Kapoor now says it’s all a misunderstanding. According to him, the phrase he used in Hindi was taken the wrong way. Back then he used the word ‘Dudhiya Badan’ to talk about Tamannaah. He argued that if the same line was said in English, it wouldn’t have triggered backlash. In his view, the intent was appreciation, not objectification. Kapoor went a step further and said that if Tamannaah was hurt, he’s ready to apologise, even saying he would “touch her feet” if needed. That line, meant to show humility, has again split opinions online.
Back then, Tamannaah was being discussed for her performance and dance. The focus moved elsewhere with Annu Kapoor saying that she looks like a milky body, in whichever language that may be. Surely some senior actors haven’t fully moved past outdated ways of “complimenting” actors. And now, saying that he will touch his feet is more of an exaggeration, and this is more controversial than the original controversy.
In today’s climate, especially in cinema, comments about appearance, particularly skin tone, are highly sensitive. What may have passed as casual talk years ago is now scrutinised differently due to the excessive social media presence of a simple statement.
