AR Rahman’s Ramayana Music Controversy: Is Freedom of Expression Becoming Too Harsh?
| In today's world, expressing opinions has become easier than ever.
In today's world, expressing opinions has become easier than ever. Social media gives everyone a platform to share their thoughts and views. However growing trend of harsh criticism is raising concerns. While everyone has the right to express their opinion, the way people respond to creative work is becoming increasingly hurtful.
The latest example is the criticism surrounding AR Rahman's music for the upcoming film Ramayana: Rise of a Legend.
The Oscar-winning composer recently addressed the mixed reactions to the song Mangal Rang which features Arijit Singh and Shreya Ghoshal. The song which portrays the wedding of Lord Rama and Goddess Sita received criticism from several listeners over its musical arrangement.
Some people questioned the use of qawwali influences while others felt that the electronic music used in the Ravana tandava sequence lacked the expected intensity. The lyrics and overall musical treatment also became subjects of debate. Responding to the criticism, Rahman said he does not believe in satisfying everyone. He quoted Steve Jobs, saying, "If you want to satisfy everyone, go sell ice cream."
The composer explained that music needs time to grow on people. He compared certain compositions to pickles, which develop better flavour as they age. He also said that he is his own first critic and does not make creative decisions without careful thought.
Criticism is necessary in cinema and every creative field. Audiences have every right to like or dislike a song, film or performance. Artists also need honest feedback to understand what works and what does not.
However, criticism becomes a problem when it turns into personal attacks, disrespect and unnecessary negativity.
Every individual has a different taste in music and cinema. What sounds disappointing to one person may feel fresh and meaningful to another. Not every creative decision needs to satisfy everyone's expectations.
Freedom of expression belongs to everyone. However, respecting different opinions is equally important. Disagreement should encourage healthy discussions not become a reason to hurt others.
