Last night, it was a kind of shocking statement coming from prominent singer Arijit Singh, who announced retirement from playback singing at the age of 38. Usually, singers don’t retire in India and the likes of legendary SP Balasubrahmanyam kept singing till their last breath. But Arijit Singh proved to be different.

Arijit Singh is popular in Telugu as well for songs like Kanulanu Taake Kala from Manam movie. He has sung many songs in Hindi, which are quite popular all over the world. With the singer announcing his retirement, many are wondering how he earns a living now. That said, the 2012 Copyright Act of India enables him to make more than many big star heroes each year.

According to reports, Arijit Singh’s songs were streamed more than 5 billion times on YouTube alone in the last year. If we take other music platforms into account, if the singer gets 5 paise royalty every time his song is played, he will end up at home taking somewhere between ₹75-100 crores each year. As he announced his retirement, the craze for his past songs would surely shoot up now.

In the current situation, if the top singers or music directors retire, surely they are equipped with lifelong income streams no matter what.
