Kamal Makes Key Comments On 'PS - 1'!

Mani Ratnam is one of the legendary filmmakers in Indian film history. He has been dreaming of making 'Ponniyin Selvan' for the past 30 years. Finally, Lyca Productions came forward to produce the film along with Mani Ratnam himself and the film began rolling but with a different set of actors. Chiyaan Vikram, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai and Trisha played the lead roles. Just like 'Baahubali', Mani Ratnam planned to tell the story in two parts. 'PS - 1' came out on 30th September amidst huge hype and expectations.

Barring the Tamil audience, the film is not well received in other languages. The huge Tamil flavour and the lack of other region actors paired up with slow narration worked against the film. The Tamil people started criticising the other language people for not encouraging the film. Kamal Hassan responded to this by saying, "I was awed by the film as a fan, and I think Tamil cinema fans will feel the same about the film. At the beginning of the film, there's a voiceover about the ‘Golden era'… in my voice. I want to recall it now. I think it is the Golden era of Tamil cinema, and as a Tamil artist and filmmaker, I feel immensely proud of it." He added, "People encourage films irrespective of the language barrier. We loved 'Shankarabharanam' and they loved 'Maro Charitra'. 'Ponniyin Selvan' is a historic story and there is no rule that other people should like it. It is not fair to criticise them about it."

Supporting Vetrimaaran's statements about saffronising the history, he said, "The name Hinduism was not there in the time of Raja Raja Cholan, there was Vainavam, Saivam and Samanam. This name was kept by foreigners not knowing what to call. Like they called Thoothukudi as Tuticorin. All this is history. We are celebrating history, we need not manipulate the history and need not bring in language issue here."
