Tax Row: Madras HC directs Suriya to pay tax including interest

Update: 2021-08-18 11:00 GMT
Two big Tamil stars Vijay and Dhanush were earlier shocked by the Madras High Court over tax cases after the Court directed them to pay the taxes they were supposed to. They have moved the Court seeking exemption from tax that was to be paid as import duties for luxury cars.

One more hero joined the list. It was actor Suriya, who was recently directed by the Madras High Court to pay the taxes including the interest.

However, the reason behind the High Court asking him to pay the tax was not for using imported cars but in connection with the IT raids conducted at his residence and his office.

The case traces back to 2011. The IT Department sleuths have conducted raids and asked the actor to pay the taxes for the financial years 2007-08 and 2008-09.

The amount Suriya was supposed to pay was Rs 3.11 crore. Then the actor moved the IT Tribunal to listen to his plea. But the Tribunal didn't hear his petition.

Then back in 2018, Suriya had moved the Madras High Court in this regard and told the court that the tribunal had delayed his plea.

After more than two years, the petition filed by actor Suriya through his counsel came up for hearing at the Madras High Court and the court heard the petition on Tuesday.

During the arguments, advocate who represented Suriya told the court that the amount that has to be paid should be waived off citing the delay of the petition at the IT Tribunal that was filed over the IT raids.

Countering the arguments of Suriya's advocate, the IT Tribunal told the court that the delay in the petition took place due to the actor saying that there was no cooperation from the actor in regard to the case.

The IT Tribunal also said that the actor did not mention the hardships involved in paying the tax amount that was mentioned by the IT Department..

Satisfied with the IT Tribunal arguments, ths Madras High Court directed the actor to pay the tax amount including the interest for the same period.
