Bilinguals are the order of the day as many stars need to breach new markets to sustain the high remuneration and budgets. But Telugu stars have not been as lucky as other language stars mainly, Tamil heroes. Now, Mahesh is trying his hand after almost 25 years at a pure and proper bilingual.
Before this, Nagarjuna Akkineni is the only hero to star in Bilinguals as a hero and as a second lead. Nagarjuna acted in total four bilinguals, Antham/ Drohi in 1990, Criminal in 1995, Rakshakudu in 1997 and Oopiri/ Thozha in 2016
Antham, Criminal and Rakshakudu are the only movies that have been made as bilinguals with him as the only lead. In Oopiri/ Thozhaeven though he is the lead, in Tamil it is promoted as Karthi's film.
While, Criminal started out as a Hindi film at a later stage producer and director decided to change it as a bilingual and few scenes have been re-shot in Telugu. But when it comes to 1997, Rakshakudu, the movie is directed a Tamil director and produced by a Tamil Producer and few parts of the movie have been shot in Telugu but majority in Tamil. Hence the movie gave a dubbed film feel and many actors who planned to do bilinguals, dropped the idea after looking at the fate of Rakshakudu.
So, we can safely say that the last true, pure and proper bilingual is Antham/ Drohi that released in 1990 which is directed by Ram Gopal Verma in both Telugu and Hindi. Even Baahubali is started out as bilingual but only few scenes have been re-shot in Tamil and major portion is still made in Telugu only.
Hence, we have to say after 25 years, it is Mahesh Babu who is daring to touch a bilingual with SPYder and as the film is being made by a top technician like A.R. Murugadoss, we wish it doesn't end up like Rakshakudu or Antham at the box office.
