Padmavat, the short name of the film, Padmavathi became a huge sensation due to the uproar of Rajputs to stop the film from being made and released. Rajput Karni Sena even hit the director and twice, disrupted the shoot.

Still, the director of the film, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, completed the movie by issuing multiple apologies to Rajput clan and clarifications that he is not trying to glorify a muslim ruler, Allauddin Khilji by showing romance between him and Rani Padmavathi, even in a dream sequence.

Later, Censor board asked the maker to change the name to Padmavat, as the movie is based on the poems based on the story of Padmavathi, named as Padmavat written by Malik Muhammad Jayasi in 1540.

State Governments of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Haryana banned the release of the film as they had to please Rajput population in their states. But Supreme Court has issued an order to lift the ban and let the film be exhibited under Government protection on 25th of January.

The movie has been cleared by CBFC, with U/A certification and the Court said that no state government should issue any kind of state orders or notifications against the public viewing of the film further and advised the state governments to call-back the ban notifications as that will be unconstitutional.

Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor are the playing the lead roles of Rani Padmavati, Raja Rana Ratan Singh and Allauddin Khilji.
