A petition seeking directives to reopen the Anganwadi centres across the nations which were shut since the Covid-19 pandemic has reached the three-judge bench at the Supreme Court.

The issue reached the top court after Maharashtra-based Dipika Jagatram Sahani moved the bench to seek directives to reopen the Anganwadi centres.

The three-judge bench comprising Justice Ashok Bhushan, Justice R. Subhash Reddy, and Justice M.R. Shah heard the plea and issued directives to the States and Union Territories (UTs).

In the directives, the bench ordered the States and Union Territories(UTs) to take a call on reopening the Anganwadi centres across the nation, barring the containment zones.

Along with the States and UTs, the bench has also directed the Women and Child Development to decide on reopening the centres by the 31st of January, 2021.

Adding further, the three-judge bench said that the States and Union Territories should see that the nutritional standards that come with the food safety law should be provided to the pregnant women, lactating mothers, and children suffering from malnutrition

As per the directives, the top court of the country directed the States and Union Territories to take a call on reopening Angnwadi centres by consulting the State Disaster Management Authorities and taking their suggestions.
