Are Tamil Films In A Huge Crisis?

Update: 2017-07-03 05:35 GMT
Tamil Film Industry is facing a big crisis now.  The situation turned out to be very tough for new films due to GST.  Theater owners are opposing GST implementation and they are protesting it by stopping the movie screenings and closing the theaters.

Young hero Gautham Karthik's lastest film 'Rangoon' released recently.  The movie received positive talk but the strike of theater owners had a negative impact on the revenue of the film.  We don't know whether the movie will be screened again after the theaters reopened in Tamil Nadu or not.  On the other hand, Selvaraghavan's latest film 'Nenjam Marappathillai' release postponed several times earlier.  They have finally fixed June 30 as the release date.  The producers had to stop the release once again due to the strike.

Tamil producers are worried with the GST.  On top of it, Tamil Nadu government has took a decision to levy enterainment tax on films.  Tamil producers were not paying a single rupee towards entertainment tax till now.  If they come up with Tamil title & get clean  'U' certificate, government used to waive off entertainment tax.  Majority of the filmmakers were utilizing the governnment's scheme till now.

They have to pay 18% GST + state government's entertainment tax now.  This will eat away big chunk of the revenues so they are worried. Tough time ahead for the Tamil producers as the government is hellbent on it's decision.
