Star director Sukumar teamed up with his 'Rangasthalam' producers i.e Mythri Movie Makers and bankrolled a rural film 'Uppena' starring Vaisshnav Tej and Kriti Shetty in the lead. His assistant Buchi Babu directed this flick and there were rumours about the film having an OTT release from a few weeks.
Films with small heroes in Tamil and Hindi are opting for an OTT release as they may not draw public into theatres. With 'Uppena' being the debut film of both hero and heroine, there is talk that this film will also have a digital release. The film reportedly got a huge deal from an OTT platform but sources say that Sukumar and team are not interesting to have a digital release.
They reportedly made this film with a budget of 18 crores which is a risk but they feel that the Mega factor, good songs and Sukumar's brand name will be enough for people to walk into theatres. Also, Tamil star hero Vijay Sethupathi will be seen as a villain in this film which acts as an added advantage.
While having OTT release may be a safer choice, it looks like the filmmakers chose to take the risky route. 'Uppena' may be one of the first few films to hit the screens after the theatres reopen.
