The recent pick of the Union Home Ministry for the Padma Awards has caught up in a big controversy with three prominent members from a single state rejecting the awards. The issue had caught the media's attention with not just one but three famous people having the same response.
Veteran singer Sandhya Mukherjee aka Sandhya Mukhopadhyay had surprised everyone by rejecting the Padma Shri award. When the officials contacted her via a phone call, she said that he is not interested in taking the award.
According to the information, the legendary Singer had felt that the civilian honour is not up to her stature and asked the officials to find a junior artiste who deserves the Padma Shri award. The 90-year-old's response to the award came as a surprise to one and all.
Talking about the decision taken by the singer, her family members said that, given the career she has and the way she had won many hearts with her melodious voice, it would be disrespectful to pick her for the Padma Shri award.
Her family had rubbished the possible political angle behind refusing the Padma Shri Award and said that there is no political angle whatsoever.
"Is it appreciable to select the legendary singer for Padma Shri at this age? No awards can match her stature and the love and respect she received from the fans is more than any awards," the family members said.
Looking at the career of the veteran singer, Sandhya Mukherjee who had started her career in the Bengali industry had also impressed the Hindi Music lovers by working under veteran Music Directors in Bollywood. Her career had spun over eight long decades. She is a recipient of the National Award and West Bengal highest award.
