Tamil stars Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Suriya, Karthi & Dhanush have a good market in Telugu States. Vijay who is only next to Rajini in Tamil Circuits is trying to expand his market here since few years. Except 'Thuppakki', None of his films were appreciated by the Telugus. Even the much-hyped Snehitudu and Jilla ended as duds. Vijay pinned lot of hopes on 'Theri' Telugu version 'Police'. Expectations only grew after Dil Raju acquired the distribution rights of the Telugu dub. 'Police' released a day after the release of Tamil version. Will it be a Box Office winner?
Synopsis:
Joseph (Vijay), a bakery owner, leads a peaceful life with his Daughter Nivedita (Nainika) in Kerala. Usually, He minds his own business and doesn't interfere in any issues what-so-ever. But, He turns violent when a gang targets his Daughter and that's when people come to know about his unseen dimension. Soon, His past as Hyderabad DCP Vijay Kumar gets unfolded. Why did Vijay left his job? What happened to his wife? What factors prompted him to change his name and settle down in Kerala? Find the answers in the theaters screenings 'Police'â¦!
Performances:
Vijay gives a honest performance and his stylish cop avatar suited him to the T. The mass elements might work to some extent in Tamil circuits as Vijay is a big star. But, Telugu Audience mayn't enjoy his heroism elevating scenes much.
As usual, Samantha excels in her character. She looks beautiful & steals the hearts with her lively performance. All the combination scenes of Vijay & Samantha came out well. Amy Jackson does the role of a Teacher. She is pretty and does what is expected from her role. Nainika (Meena's Daughter) is terrific throughout the movie.
Mahendran creates the necessary impact playing the baddie and he is unlike regular villains. Rajendran does well as Hero's sidekick. Radhika is superb. Prabhu does a fine job.
Pros:
Heroism-elevation Scenes
Music
Interval Block
Cons:
Story
Screenplay
Second Half
Technicalities:
GV Prakash Kumar's Music is appreciable, especially the duets of Vijay-Samantha. Background Score is an asset to the movie. He elevates the key scenes to the whole new level with fabulous BGM. Camera Work by George Williams is outstanding. Production Values are pretty good. Dubbing looks a bit jerky. Director Atlee earned lot of respect with 'Raja Rani'. He, however, couldn't reach the standards set by him with 'Police'. Audience don't expect a routine story & predictable screenplay from a promising filmmaker like him.
Analysis:
From Basha to Samarasimha Reddy, Narasimha Naidu and Indra, We have seen a lot of films with a storyline similar to that of 'Police'. Protagonist hides his identity and leads a peaceful life in other state. He doesn't lose his cool no matter what happens around him but doesn't tolerate when someone troubles his close ones. Then, The Flashback unfoldsâ¦Hero is supremely powerful in the past, Villain takes advantage of a situation to disturb his life & then Hero shifts his base to other part of the state/country. After the end of Flashback, Hero shifts to his original character to take vengeance against Villain Gang.
Its shocking to see a Director like Atlee who made his debut with a refreshing love story 'Raja Rani' preferred a routine commercial entertainer for his second venture. Trying to play the safe game worked against him & the movie here. Predictable screenplay is a huge setback. Audience could guess the next scene after a point but Atlee made sure most of the film is entertaining.
First Half of 'Police' is fun and Interval sequence is the major highlight of the movie. Atlee did a good job till the end of Flashback episode in the latter half. While Hero-Heroine romantic track is simple but endearing, Scenes of the rape case were narrated in a gripping manner. All the Heroism-elevating Scenes were electrifying.
Last 45 minutes, where the proceedings run on a predictable note, is a spoiler. These cliched sequences led to increase of Run Time (159 minutes). Had if the film lasted for 20 minutes after the Flashback episode, Final result could have been a lot different. Overall, 'Police' is a routine cop drama which entertains in bits & parts.
Bottom Line: Routine....but Entertaining!
