One Telugu Director Can Change a Hero’s Market, But What Happens Next?
Telugu audiences have always welcomed talented heroes from other film industries. Actors from Tamil and Malayalam cinema have built a good fan base in Telugu.
Telugu audiences have always welcomed talented heroes from other film industries. Actors from Tamil and Malayalam cinema have built a good fan base in Telugu. But there is an interesting pattern in their Telugu market. Many of these heroes create big noise when they work with Telugu directors. However, the same hype does not always continue when they return to films made by directors from their own language.
Dhanush is a good example. He worked with Telugu director Venky Atluri for Sir. The film became a big success and connected very well with Telugu audiences. Dhanush also got more recognition in the Telugu market. But after that, his Tamil films and other-language films did not automatically get the same level of market in Telugu. This shows that one successful Telugu film does not always guarantee a permanent Telugu market.
Suriya is now working with Telugu director Venky Atluri for Viswanathan and Sons. There is definitely interest because of the combination of Suriya and a Telugu filmmaker. But it is too early to say that this film alone will completely change Suriya's market for all his future movies.
Dulquer Salmaan has a similar story. He became extremely popular among Telugu audiences with films like Mahanati, Sita Ramam and Lucky Baskhar. These movies gave him strong recognition in Telugu. More importantly, all these films had a strong Telugu connection through their directors and storytelling.
But when Dulquer comes with a Malayalam film directed by a Malayalam filmmaker, the situation can be different. His upcoming film I'm Game is a clear example. Even though Dulquer is already a familiar face in Telugu, the film has not created the same level of buzz among Telugu audiences. The trailer and promotions have also not created much excitement.
This does not mean Telugu audiences do not like these heroes. They clearly do. The bigger point is that the Telugu audience connects strongly with Telugu storytelling and directors.
For an outside hero, working with a Telugu director can be a powerful way to enter the Telugu market. But maintaining that market is a completely different challenge. One blockbuster can create attention, but only consistent content can create a permanent market.
So, for heroes like Dhanush, Suriya and Dulquer, Telugu directors may be the bridge to a bigger Telugu market. But whether that market stays with them after they return to their own industries is the real question.
