Back in the day, when a film got just ₹30-40 crores gross opening on Day 1, it used to be considered as an all-time record. Later, with the arrival of the likes of “Baahubali” and other highly effective moving cinema, this opening number touched ₹100-200 crores, thus showcasing how big the scale of the Indian movie market is. Guess what, for all the hype and hoopla around it, the massively appreciated and anticipated Dhurandhar 2 would have created a new record by touching ₹300 crore opening. But that milestone was missed.

Apparently, Allu Arjun and Sukumar’s giant commercial flick “Pushpa 2” has hit the mighty ₹294 crores gross opening from the worldwide box office on its release day. For the kind of craze Pushpa sequel enjoyed in the Bollywood arena and in the Telugu states, this opening became a huge possibility. And now, when Dhurandhar 2 was expected to breach those numbers, the film ended up opening with a little over ₹230 crores gross from the global box office from all the versions. This low number is mainly due to poor release planning, as Hindi, Telugu, Tamil and Kannada version films' content loading saw unprecedented hurdles, and shows were cancelled in many cities, including Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai. That led to losing a huge chunk of the collection on the first day of the release.

Otherwise, Dhurandhar 2 would have created history in the world of Indian cinema by becoming the first film to open with ₹300 crores gross collection on Day 1, a feat that would be very difficult for many big-ticket films to achieve. Now that Dhurandhar 2 has moved on to its Day 2 and is poised to collect more than ₹1500-2000 crores in its lifetime, industry giants and trade circuits are looking to the next film that might achieve this feat. Yes, Rajamouli and Mahesh’s Varanasi have the chance of creating that record, so it’s over to them!
