Malayalam actor Dulquer Salmaan has been winning hearts with hits like Mahanati, Bangalore Days, Ok Bangaram and Sita Ramam. Telugu audiences love him for his style and acting, and every new project gets people excited.

His latest, Kaantha, released on Children’s Day, November 14, co-starring Bhagya Shree Borse and Rana Daggubati. Set in 1950s Madras, it’s a period mystery thriller about director Ayya, his tense bond with star T.K. Mahadevan, and a murder on the set of Mahadevan’s film, investigated by Inspector Devaraj. Dulquer co-produced it with Rana and others, and he had been eyeing this script for years, so he was very invested.

But the film didn’t click. In three days, it made only Rs 18 crore worldwide, and it seems unlikely to pick up much more. Critics said Dulquer’s performance was solid, maybe the highlight, but the story didn’t really work, leaving fans disappointed despite his effort.

Now people are comparing him to Suriya, who has tried a mix of mass entertainers and experimental films. Suriya’s acting often gets praise even if the movie flops, and fans are wondering if Dulquer will find that sweet spot, strong acting plus a story that actually clicks with the audience.
