₹200 Crore Plus… OTT Release in Just Four Weeks?

‘Irumudi’ is still holding strong in theatres even as it enters its fourth week.

‘Irumudi’ is still holding strong in theatres even as it enters its fourth week. The film continues to attract audiences, with collections reportedly picking up again on its fourth Saturday. More than 1,000 shows are still running across India, making its theatrical performance particularly noteworthy.

Amid this strong run, reports have started circulating that the film could begin streaming on Netflix from September 18. That has naturally raised a question among trade circles and moviegoers: if a successful film is still bringing in substantial theatrical revenue, why rush it onto OTT after just four weeks?

The issue, however, is bigger than ‘Irumudi’.

The Four-Week OTT Window

A four-week OTT window has been a common practice in the Telugu film industry for some time. When producers sell digital rights ahead of a theatrical release, the streaming timeline is often included as part of the deal.

For a film that underperforms at the box office, an early OTT release can work in the producer's favour. But when a film unexpectedly turns into a blockbuster, the same four-week gap can suddenly feel too short for theatres.

And changing the agreed OTT window after a film becomes a hit is not always easy.

Exhibitors Want Eight Weeks

Earlier this year, exhibitors across South India pushed for an eight-week OTT window, arguing that every film - big or small - should get at least 56 days in theatres.

Producers, however, did not immediately agree to the demand. Producer associations from Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala also came together on a common platform, arguing that a uniform rule should not be imposed without discussions with the producers.

A major reason behind the resistance is the importance of digital-rights revenue. For many films, money from OTT and other digital platforms plays a crucial role in recovering the production budget.

What Happens With ‘Irumudi’?

Released on August 21, ‘Irumudi’ has reached its fourth week and is still standing strong despite competition from newer releases.

According to tracking reports, the film reportedly collected around ₹2.25 crore net in India on September 12, its fourth Saturday. More than 1,200 shows were also said to be continuing.

In other words, the theatrical demand has not completely faded even as the reported OTT window approaches.

However, there is still no official confirmation from the makers regarding the September 18 Netflix date.

There is also talk that the OTT premiere could be pushed back by a few days because of the film's strong theatrical performance. But if September 18 was already locked as part of the digital-rights agreement, changing the date after the film's success may not be that simple.

A Precedent for Future Releases?

If ‘Irumudi’ does begin streaming on September 18 as currently being reported, it could reinforce the industry's existing four-week OTT model - even for a film that has crossed ₹200 crore and continues to perform well in its fourth week.

But if the OTT release is postponed because of the strong theatrical run, the film could set a different kind of precedent: successful films may have room to renegotiate or push back pre-decided digital release dates.

Either way, what happens with ‘Irumudi’ could become an interesting case study in the ongoing debate over the ideal theatrical-to-OTT window.
