₹100 Cr Opening: Jana Nayagan Dashed Hopes

Superstar Vijay’s last outing at the box office, a couple of years before, was “The GOAT” and that film is also a disaster of epic proportions. However, The GOAT opened with ₹123+ crore collection on its Day 1 on September 1, 2024. But when it comes to “Jana Nayagan”, the film that was super hyped from Day 1, last year, has touched around ₹80 crore only. What went wrong?
Apparently, if a film is hitting during the festival season like Sankranthi, that definitely would bring in more footfalls to theatres. Had Jana Nayagan released on time back in January 2026, surely the film would have got a humongous ₹150 crores opening as expected. The film’s delay due to various factors, including some religious-toned dialogues in the movie, has led to such a big delay, and that effect could be felt now.
At the same time, Vijay was not even the Chief Minister at that time, so naturally there would be curiosity for the audience about what he might have crafted inside the movie. Now that he is already won the Tamil Nadu elections and become Chief Minister, surely the audience will not feel any excitement to watch the movie. Only fans will have that high now. Because after watching the World Cup Final live, the second telecast will not get attention. Similarly, after Vijay reached the end goal of becoming CM, surely his last outing will lose that special charm.
After such a dismal opening, bad reviews of the film are going to affect it more badly, and it might end up collecting only around 120-140 crores in the first weekend as per trade estimates.
