There was a time when star directors entering acting used to look surprising. But now, it is slowly becoming a survival pattern in the South cinema for many filmmakers who were once hailed for their storytelling.

First, we have Kushi fame director SJ Suryah transforming into a full-fledged actor these days. He completely reinvented his career and is now the costliest character artist, mostly playing villain roles. Then comes the director of films like Gharshana and Ye Maya Chesave, Gautham Vasudev Menon. He also started appearing regularly on screen, balancing acting and direction simultaneously. These days, more than direction, he’s inclining towards acting only.

Now another major director seems to be entering the same route. He’s none other than Pizza and other cult films fame Karthik Subbaraj. After delivering movies like Petta, Mahaan, and Jigarthanda, he has come up with Suriya’s Retro last year, and that flopped big time. Since then, Karthik is said to be struggling to get the right star for his next. Hence, he’s said to be making his debut as an actor now. In the upcoming film Pocket Novel, directed by Thiagaraja Kumararaja of Super Deluxe fame, Karthik Subbaraj will make his debut.

The project itself already carries massive expectations because it marks the reunion of Vijay Sethupathi and Thiagarajan Kumararaja after Super Deluxe. With nearly 50% shoot reportedly completed, the film is already becoming one of the most anticipated Tamil projects. However, we have to see if Karthik Subbaraj will really make the most of this acting debut or not.
