Talented Tamil film maker Lokesh Kanagaraj had the reputation of being one of the most consistent film makers in South Indian cinema. But he is on the verge of facing his first commercial failure in the form of Coolie.
Coming to the box office side of things, this film is emerging as a failure, and the result could have been much worse if not for the strong openings which were generated.
In Tamil Nadu, it earned ₹114 crore, which is the highest among all the states. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana together added ₹60 crore. Kerala contributed ₹23 crore, while Karnataka brought in another ₹36 crore.
From North India, the film collected ₹35 crore, showing decent performance outside the South. The biggest boost came from the overseas market, where the film collected a massive ₹160 crore.
With all these numbers combined, the movie’s worldwide total now stands at ₹428 crore. However, the breakeven point for the film is fixed at ₹600 crore. This means the movie still needs to earn around ₹172 crore more to be fully profitable. At present, the recovery percentage is about 71%, which shows the film is performing well but has not yet reached its target.
The overseas success is the biggest highlight of this run, as it gave the largest contribution. The collections from the South Indian states have also been mediocre.
Considering the fact that the film has generated 70% of the theatrical numbers, it is going to be a cost failure. Lazy handling of the story and screenplay have clearly come back to haunt the film.
