Suriya Turns Villain For Lokesh Kangaraj

Lokesh Kanagaraj’s DC had very little hype before its release. Even though Lokesh is a popular filmmaker, there were doubts about whether he could impress the audience as a hero under another director. However, the movie surprised everyone with its strong response from the morning shows.

DC received positive talk soon after its release. The film has plenty of action, violence and bloodshed, and some viewers also pointed out these elements. Still, they did not stop the audience from coming to theatres. The movie quickly moved into the hit zone and started showing good growth at the box office.

At one stage, trade circles expected DC to easily cross the Rs 100 crore gross mark. But now, the film has faced an unexpected challenge from Vishwanath and Sons. The Suriya-starrer has received strong support from audiences especially in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

This has affected DC’s screen count in some areas. In a few B and C centres, theatres have reduced DC shows and given more screens to Vishwanath and Sons. The Suriya film is enjoying good occupancy and is attracting family audiences in several places.

The competition is not limited to the Telugu states. DC is also facing pressure in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and overseas markets. Though both films belong to different genres, weekend collections largely depend on the number of screens and audience interest. At present, Vishwanath and Sons appears to have an advantage in this race.

The coming Sunday will be very important for DC. The film needs strong collections before the next big release arrives. Trade talk suggests that DC is currently close to the Rs 80 crore mark. It needs another Rs 20 crore to reach the Rs 100 crore target.

On paper, another Rs 20 crore may look easy. But with Vishwanath and Sons continuing its strong run and another release coming next week, the task is not simple. The next few days will decide whether DC can finally touch the Rs 100 crore mark.
